The European team takes the trophy home once again

If ever there were a setting more fitting for Europe to claim the Ryder Cup as their own, it was in the Ochil Hills of Perthshire on the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles. Banks of spectators lined the fairways, wrapped in flags or clad in kilts and an array of other eye-catching attire, as they clamored to see their golfing heroes battle it out for the coveted golden trophy that Europe brought back from Medinah two years ago.

In stark contrast to the normally serene scenes that are the backdrop to golf tournaments, the Ryder Cup was played out to a soundtrack of “Olé Olé Olé Olé” and the rallying call “Yooooo-rup”. For the team, on the other hand, it was a day of relaxed smiles – victory seemed steadily within grasp while morale was buoyed by 45,000 passionate spectators. “Come on, Rory, give us a dance,” sang the Irish golfer’s teammates, and he happily obliged, reflecting one of team captain Paul McGinley’s messages that they should “have fun”.

In the final moments, it came down to Welshman Jamie Donaldson to play a magnificent wedge shot to the 15th green, leaving his opponent to concede defeat and leading Europe to their victory with a resounding 16.5 – 11.5 score. It was a week where golf and the European Team’s attire flew the flag for Scotland, and the players in this historic biennial match fought in style to take home the trophy they’d come for.
