THE 'KING' OF GAMING
'I love games because in addition to entertaining and offering an escape from reality, I am able to bring people together across generations, cultures and countries'
Gummy candies, bubbles, little animals, social interaction and ever-more complicated (and difficult) levels – these are just several of the factors that have contributed to the immense success of top social gaming company, King, and its Italian CEO and co-founder, Riccardo Zacconi.
The 40-year-old native of Rome, who was included in The Guardian’s most powerful people in media list in 2013, has succeeded over the last 12 years in building a veritable digital empire on a culture whose key principles are talent, failure and humility: 'Failure and success are two sides of the same coin. If you want to succeed, you need to consider failure as an integral part of the process. Don’t get discouraged, just move forward with great humility. If you don’t make mistakes, it means you’re not running fast enough.'
Riccardo lives between a surreal world of games – King has developed nearly 200 so far – and a more concrete reality of surprising numbers, like their network of 356 million monthly unique users, and he believes inspiration can come from anywhere in between. Candy Crush was invented in a bathtub, after all. His own creativity comes from opportunities and challenges – the challenge to create content that is interesting, fun, simple but also unique; something that will entertain millions of people around the world.
Riccardo started down this path with tenacity and initiative at the dawn of a new digital age, a journey he relives in his 200 Steps video. Along the way, he reveals the five elements that have driven him throughout: inspiration, derived from challenges, opportunities, the possibility of creating innovative games; innovation, the result of working with great talent; the importance of people, the most vital ingredient to any entrepreneur’s success; the tenacity and humility that distinguishes entrepreneurship; the future, between the fun of inventing new games and the willingness to help fellow entrepreneurs succeed.
