HOW TO DRESS
This season’s take on the Duffle Coat
Canali celebrates 100 years of the iconic Montgomery, reinterpreting the style in a contemporary key.
Worn for the first time in 1914 by British navy men, this heavy wool coat that takes its name from General Bernard Law Montgomery, stood out for its practicality: a hood, patch pockets and its famous bison horn buttons that turned a basic garment into an ideal protective garment against the Atlantic chill.
While the present-day gentleman may not necessarily have to weather maritime missions, this style is still a pragmatic and stylish addition to your outerwear collection, thanks to unconventional fabric and innovative details. Coarse wool is replaced with soft sheepskin while sophisticated, hidden horn buttons substitute the toggle fastenings and the large patch pockets are complemented by smaller, vertical ones on the chest.
The coat is perfect for casual outings and weekend getaways, worn over a soft cashmere V-neck sweater or a silk mohair variant with jacquard motif, both in the same nuances as the “Monty Coat”. A two-handle bag in soft, tumbled calfskin completes the look.
