Nautical Style for Summer 2014
The combination of sun, sand and sea tends to bring out the best in people. And not least in the style stakes. Though Kennedy was sharp in a suit, he was in his element aboard his yacht Honey Fitz, dressed in white chinos and a navy windbreaker. The same can be said of many of his iconic contemporaries, from Gianni Agnelli (and his thick-knit fisherman’s sweaters) to Cary Grant, who indelibly defines seaside style in Hitchcock’s 1955 movie To Catch a Thief.
Achieving a nautical style is simple: stick to navy and neutral colours, adding statement pieces, like a micro-striped cotton blazer, for more dressy occasions. For 50s authenticity, try one of the bowling-collared white shirts, adding a contemporary twist with a pair of slim cut grey or striped chinos.
